Meeuwen – Gruitrode International Championships 2009
2 - 4 January 2009

Kin Ryu's Judoka.

The members of Kin Ryu Judo Club have kicked off 2009 in style by winning their first international medals abroad.

The six youngsters all aged between 8 and 11 and one adult competed at the Meeuwen – Gruitrode international championships held in Belgium.

David O’Doherty (Snr) was the first to compete in the seniors and masters groundwork competition.

This was a tough event and involved fighters just doing groundwork and trying to hold their opponent down, armlock them or strangle them to win.

David fought well against strong opponents and was unlucky to finish outside the medals in fifth place.

The following day it was the turn of the juniors and they were competing in a full junior international tournament.

In the U13 age group the club was represented by James Rivers and David O'Doherty (Jnr), both fought well and did the club proud finishing in silver and gold medal position respectively.

After them it was the turn of the younger players in the U11 section, and representing the club was Joseph O’Doherty, Andrew Robertson, Sean Cumper and Kimberley Davy.

The first to fight was Joseph and despite an unlucky start (losing with just 1 second to go) he fought well to take Silver in his weight group.

Following him was Andrew and Sean and both fought hard to take bronzes in their groups.

Last to fight and representing the girls was Kimberley and she kept up the winning streak taking the bronze in her group to round off the weekend.

Despite all being tired when they finished the players all agreed that it had been a thouroughly enjoyable weekend and hopefully the start of some of their international judo careers.

Lisa and Martin, were also in attendance as coach and referee, with parents Rihanna, Mick and Denise.

Well done to all!!
